Commercial Dog Food for Your Dog? [14 Jun 2008|04:11am]
Commercial Dog Food for Your Dog?
 by: Brigitte Smith
What you feed your dog is really SO important for your dog's ultimate health, susceptibility to illness, and longevity.
You know, if you really want your dog to be as healthy as s/he can be, you should stop feeding ANY of the widely available commercial dog foods.
I'm talking here about the types of dog food commonly found in supermarkets, and even about most of the supposedly superior brands sold in some supermarkets, pet food shops, and even by many vets.
The cheaper the brand, then generally the more full of garbage it is, but even many of the more expensive brands leave much to be desired.
What do you think is an ideal diet for your dog? plump chickens? choice cuts of juicy beef and lamb? maybe a few healthy fresh grains for variety? the odd fresh herbs, vegetables and fruit?
You'd be right.
But how many of the above ingredients do you think go into commercial pet food?
A lot? Only a little? If you said yes to either of these, you'd be dead wrong.
The average commercial dog food bears NO relation to the above list of choice ingredients, despite what pet food manufacturers display in some of their marketing, and despite what the list of ingredients on the pack or can might tend to indicate.
There is very, very little (if any) of the above ingredients in the average commercial dog food, and by the time it's been overcooked at sustained high temperatures, and sprayed with preservative agents, the resultant "food" can be very harmful to your dog's health and wellbeing indeed.
Suffice to say that if you're feeding your dog ANY commercially available dog food, you're exposing your dog to a source of chemically enhanced, overprocessed, garbage, the meat source for which includes diseased carcasses which have been left for up to 5 days before being processed.
Enough to turn you off for life? It was for me. As you know, I've always fed my dogs a diet of mainly raw meat and bones. But I like to give them a little treat in the mornings rather than just feed them once a day (which, by the way, IS all a dog NEEDS). I used to give them a handful of dry dog food each morning, sometimes the cheaper supermarket brands, and sometimes the "brand" names which cost 4 or 5 times as much. Now that I know better, I never give my dogs any of that garbage.
I should say that SOME of the expensive pet foods which are readily available ARE better than the cheaper brands. BUT, most are still far from an ideal diet for your dog, so query whether the extra money is money well spent.
If the product says it's "with real chicken", did you know that it only needs to contain 3% of chicken? Neither did I.
If the first item listed is meat or chicken, did you know that this doesn't mean that's the main ingredient? Neither did I.
Take a close look at the label. It's likely to list a meat first, and then 2, 3, 4 or 5 types of grains. This is a very misleading tactic used by the commercial pet food manufacturers. Each of the grains individually may be slightly less in quantity than the meat. But added together? They're probably nearly 2, 3, 4 or 5 times the quantity of the meat ingredient.
After having looked into this issue in a great deal of detail, I'm convinced that the most healthy diet for your dog is mainly fresh meat, with some fresh veges and a little grain thrown in. And this alone is NOT enough. You need to give your dog a vitamin supplement always, for optimal health.
And for the very best health, there ARE some reputable HEALTHY, wholesome, holistic dog food manufacturers, which really DO provide wonderfully healthy food for our dogs.

Apistogramma , Dwarf Cichlids In The Aquarium [10 Jun 2008|01:11am]
Apistogramma , Dwarf Cichlids In The Aquarium
 by: Auke Veenstra
The real apistogramma's come from southern America, they all have the same characteristics, like a complex breeding behavior, as their large relatives, only their size is different. Besides the apistogramma group there are also some relatively popular dwarf cichlids from Africa, like the Pelvicachromis group. From this group the most widespread cichlid is the Pelvicachromis pulcher, also known as the Kribensis or Purple cichlid.
Generally the cichlids from the apistogramma group are more fragile and harder to maintain, and breed, for a longer period of time. In my opinion apistogramma's are not real beginner species. They are more likely to get diseases if not all the environmental variables are properly taken care of. They need soft and acidic water with a low PH value, a PH of 5.5 to 6 is preferable. They hardly eat dry foods, best is to feed them live foods or frozen food, like bloodworms, brine shrimp and mosquito larvae. Apistogramma species can be kept in a large tropical community aquarium, but be sure the other fish are not too small, they can defend their territory very fiercely, and can be quite aggressive when they are breeding. In my opinion it is best to keep the apistogramma's on their own, in a larger aquarium you could combine two apistogramma variants together, maybe supplemented with a small group of other fish, like some livebearers or betta's. They also can be kept together with discus or angel fish. I always have a harem of apisto's in my discus tanks, just to populate the lower areas of the aquarium and I really like these small dwarfs with a big attitude.
The cichlids from the Pelvicachromis group are much more tolerant when it comes to water values and feeding, I do consider these cichlids a good beginner species. They are hardened, beautiful colored and eat almost anything. The Pelvicachromis pulcher is maybe one of the most easy to breed cichlids as well. If you have an adult couple they will reproduce, in a community tank, a special species tank or in a pond, some people like to breed them in their pond during summer. Actually some of the biggest and nicest colored Pelvicachromis pulcher were pond bred and raised. The only thing to keep in mind with these cichlids is that they are capable of redesigning your aquarium, they can make huge holes and are real little bulldozers. So if you have, or want to setup, a subtile planted tank, don't add a couple of Pelvicachromis to your aquarium.
The last dwarf cichlid I want to mention is the Microgeophagus ramirezi, or Ram cichlid. Their behavior and care are roughly the same as the apistogramma's but they are more tolerant when it comes to water values, and in my experience they are easier to keep in good condition. Unlike the apistos they have to be kept as a couple, not a harem but that's the only breeding experience I have. I have tried several couples, have a couple in a breeding tank right now, but I have never even had a clutch of eggs. I know from other breeders that they are kind of hard to get going, but if they do they never stop.

Constantine stuff! plus waxing philosophical, Bush-style! [25 Jan 2005|11:15pm]

[ mood | calm ]

First off, scenes from the comic based on the movie:
spoilers!!Collapse )

Go here: http://wwws.warnerbros.de/constantine/ and click on VI after the mask thing comes up, and there is a short clip featuring Gavin.

Here: http://pdl.warnerbros.com/wbmovies/...i/trailer_a.mov is the US trailer, minus Gavin.

And here: http://www.mymovies.net/player/play.asp?TRID=1076|1593&filmid=1076&sec=trailers&comingsoon=true is the international trailer, with Gavin.

You will probably have to copy and paste those.

I got those from the Hair Left Morning Wet board: http://www.hairleftmorningwet.com/forums/index.php It has basically replaced the official Bush board, which appears to have died. It's a great board, and a lot of people from the Official board are there. :)

Gavin is also in the February issues of Jane (Paris Hilton on the cover), In Style (Nicole Kidman), GQ (Jamie Foxx), and Maxim (Teri Hatcher). He is mentioned in the Rolling Stone with Gwen, but there are no pictures. It was great to buy all these magazines, it was almost like old times when Bush was everywhere. sigh.

I made this lame icon from this pictureCollapse ), which I got from http://www.gavin-rossdale.net/ It is one of the pictures from In Style.

Wish me a happy Bush anniversary! I officially became a fan on January 26th, 1997, after hearing Sixteen Stone in its entirety for the first time. It was during the Super Bowl that year (I forget even who was playing!) and I was so engrossed in listening to my dad's cd that I had borrowed that I didn't watch the game. I was late coming into the band cause I heard "Everything Zen" and wasn't that impressed, (I even made fun of the video!) but my dad bought the cd and LOVED it, and pressured me to listen to it for a long time and I finally did, and was instantly hooked. It described so much of how I was feeling in my life at that time, so much about my life and thoughts, that I loved it instantly. I went out immediately and bought both cds for myself, and devoured every minute piece of information I could find, until I turned into the psycho fan I eventually became. God I miss the guys so much! I can't wait for Constantine even though it might suck, and I am so excited/nervous about Institute that I can barely stand it! :)

x-posted a bit. sorry for rambling. If anyone thinks this should be lj-cutted more, let me know.

Intro [14 Jun 2004|02:47pm]

[ mood | excited ]

Hey all,

I've been lurking for quite some time now, but I thought I'd finally say hello. My name is Kristen, I'm 21, and I've been a huge fan of both No Doubt and Bush for almost 10 years now. I've seen No Doubt live twice and Bush live three times. I used to have a Bush fansite waaaay back in the day.

My dream has always been to meet G&G. I actually had a dream last night that I did, which prompted me to post on here today.

Did anyone see the story on G&G and their new Puli in US Weekly? Soooo cute.

Taken from the ezboard forum (Gwen in another movie?) [25 May 2004|10:00am]

SawRed says:

"So I am just watching the Sharon Osbourne show... and Rosanna Arquette is on, talking about her most recent release "Searching for Debra Winger", which she produced.

Arquette was just talking about her next project, which is going to be a look into rock couples, how they balance the work and the relationship and that sort of thing. She was telling Sharon that she wanted her and Ozzy to appear in it, and then she started listing off some of the people she's already had agree and she said very clearly "Gwen Stefani's going to be in it".

I tried to find info about it on imdb.com but she didn't mention a title. Usually imdb.com has upcoming projects but I think this one is really new... it's a documentary so it won't take an extremely long time to make."
